2. How Automatic Selection Routes Each Message
Learn the five signals OUPI evaluates per message — task type, complexity, plan eligibility, cost and reliability — and how they produce a model choice shown by a badge.
Every time you send a message without picking a model yourself, OUPI evaluates five signals to decide which model should answer:
- Task type — Is this writing, analysis, code, data extraction, or something else? The platform reads your message and its context (including any attached files or tools) to classify the intent.
- Complexity — A short reformulation and a multi-step legal analysis are not the same job. OUPI gauges complexity from the nature of the request, not just word count, and escalates to stronger models when the task is hard.
- Plan eligibility — Your subscription and any team-level restrictions define which models are available. The selector only picks among those you're allowed to use.
- Cost — Among eligible models that can handle the task, lighter ones are preferred when they're sufficient, saving your credits.
- Reliability — Provider health is measured continuously. A model that has been failing recently is set aside until it recovers.
The best-scoring model answers, and a badge under the response tells you exactly which one was used.
Why a simple question gets a light model — and that's a good thing.
If you ask OUPI to rewrite a sentence or draft a quick email, you'll often see a fast or balanced model badge. That's intentional: a frontier model wouldn't produce a noticeably better rewrite, but it would cost ten to thirty times more credits and respond more slowly. The selector escalates automatically when it detects multi-step reasoning, long documents, or complex instructions — you don't need to intervene.
If you ever disagree with the choice, you can override it: open the model selector and pick the model you want. That manual choice then holds for the rest of the conversation.
Reasoning effort adapts too.
Some models support extended reasoning — thinking longer before answering. When automatic selection is active, the reasoning effort is derived from the detected complexity of your message. A simple rewrite gets none; a calculation with intermediate steps or a decision involving several criteria gets more. There's no manual setting to tune: the trade-off between speed, cost, and depth is handled per message, so you benefit from deeper thinking exactly when it matters.
Built-in failover keeps you moving.
Reliability isn't just a scoring factor — it's also a safety net. If a provider becomes unavailable or its quota is exhausted while generating your answer, OUPI automatically retries once using a model from a different provider. You don't have to do anything; the platform handles the switch behind the scenes.
Note: this failover only works when your account has a remaining balance. If your credits are empty, the whole routing engine is skipped.
Only override automatic selection when you have a specific reason — for example, you need a particular provider for data-sensitivity rules, you're working with a very long document that needs a large context window, or you know the task is unusually hard. For everyday work, letting OUPI route saves credits and time.
Open the OUPI chat and send two messages without choosing a model: first a simple one ("Rewrite this sentence more formally"), then a complex one ("Compare three options with pros, cons and a recommendation"). Check the badge under each answer — you should see a lighter model for the first and a stronger one for the second.
Seeing and changing the choice.
The badge beneath every AI answer names the model that was used. If you want a different model for the next messages, open the model selector and pick one — your manual choice holds for the rest of the conversation. You can also regenerate the last answer with a different model to compare quality side by side, without losing any conversation history.
For missions and agents, the logic is slightly different: missions run on an admin-configured model pool and can consult the same health signals, but model switching happens between steps rather than per chat message.
