2. Recording & Categorizing Transactions
Learn how to add, import, and auto-categorize transactions so your data is accurate and ready for analysis.
OUPI Finance lets you track three types of transactions: income, expenses, and transfers. To add a transaction manually, navigate to Finance > Transactions and click the "+ New transaction" button. You'll need to fill in the amount, select a category, and set the date. Keeping these three fields accurate is essential because every AI-driven feature in OUPI Finance — from your Health Score to the Anomaly Narrator — relies on well-structured transaction data. The more complete and consistent your entries, the more meaningful your analyses will be.
When you import transactions (for example, from a bank export), OUPI Finance's AI auto-categorization kicks in. Instead of manually labeling each entry, the system assigns categories automatically based on the transaction description and patterns it recognizes. This dramatically speeds up data entry, especially when you're onboarding months of historical data. You can always review and correct any category the AI assigns — doing so also helps improve future suggestions. Accurate categorization is the foundation for features like Spending DNA and the Anomaly Narrator, which analyze your habits over time.
After importing transactions, quickly scan the auto-assigned categories and correct any mismatches. The Anomaly Narrator compares your spending against the last 3 months, so miscategorized entries can trigger false anomalies or hide real ones.
Keep in mind that several AI features depend on having a minimum volume of data. For instance, the Financial Health Score requires at least 10 transactions before it can calculate a meaningful result, and the Anomaly Narrator needs at least 3 months of transaction history to establish a reliable baseline for comparison. So when you're just getting started, prioritize entering or importing enough historical data to unlock these powerful analysis tools.
AI features consume credits: the Smart Financial Advisor costs ~2 credits per question, the Health Score costs 1 credit per calculation, and the Anomaly Narrator costs 1 credit per analysis. Plan your usage accordingly, especially during initial setup when you may run multiple analyses.
Go to Finance > Transactions in your OUPI dashboard. Click "+ New transaction" and add a sample expense — enter an amount, pick a category, and set today's date. Then review the Transactions list to confirm your entry appears correctly.
You now know how to add transactions manually via Finance > Transactions, how to leverage AI auto-categorization when importing data, and why accurate categorization matters for downstream analyses. Remember: the Health Score needs at least 10 transactions, and the Anomaly Narrator requires 3 months of history. Keep your data clean and well-categorized, and OUPI Finance's AI tools will deliver much more reliable insights.
